Top Things to Do and See Tybee Island Camping...
Tybee Island
It's a small island off of Georgia Coast. It quaint and quiet. Just our style. we decided to explore it over the summer of 2017 for our 10 year anniversary trip. We enjoyed so much we took our kids back in 2018 for Spring Break. I wanted to share my top list of what to do and see while in Tybee if camping is your thing.
1. Stay at the Riverend Campground.
~ You will find a clean, well maintained, great customer service campground. We didn't know what to expect when we were there. But when go there and started to explore we loved it. So much that we took our kids back for Spring Break in 2018. They have a swimming pool, with nice longe chairs around it. A giant screened in pavilion to have a family dinner. A game room, with tables and a TV to catch that sports game on TV. The campground has wifi and a store right there for odds and ends that you may have forgotten. Along with the most important clean, individual bath houses. You are not in a group bathrooms with stalls, everyone has their own place. We went during Spring Break and the grounds were completely full and only had to wait for the bathroom a few times. Lastly, walking distance to a few restaurants and the beach. The most important.
2. Bring your bikes.
~ Get our the bike rake, figure out how to put it in on the car and go. It is so worth it. We brought our bikes both trips and we loved it. Mainly because we are coming from the hills of Marietta, Ga that we don't ride a ton in our neighborhood, it was great to get out and ride everywhere. We went to restaurants, different beaches, the light house, farmers market, you named it on the island, we went. The kids loved loved loved having their bikes. They no joke road them from 8am to 9pm. (Bring Glow sticks for kids. They loved putting them on their bike tires. It made it even more exciting to ride their bikes.) By the kids safely riding around the campground, we were able to breath and enjoy our time of not having to entrain them for so many hours during the day. If you don't want to hassle with bringing your bikes, you can rent them on the island. Reliable shop on the North and South Side of the island. http://timsbeachgear.com. My sister rented from them, and my husband has bike repaired by them.Tim's Beach Gear http://timsbeachgear.com.
3. Go to HUC-A-POOS
~Huc-a-poos is on the North Side of the Island. It is a short cut walk from the campground. It is a pizza by the slice, find your own table, great place to feed the whole family for under $30, good food restaurant. During the evening hours they have live bands, gets little bit more crowded but worth the hang out.
4. Tybeans
~Who is Tybeans? It is a nice, quaint coffee shop on the Island. Walking distance from the campground or a quick bike ride. My husband and I love to go find local coffee shops when we travel. It is something that we always look out for. They are right next to Huc-a-poos. So go check out the cute little eclectic coffee shop.
5. North Beach
~ The best part of going camping on the coast is the fact you are close to the beach. We loved being a quick bike ride away from the beach. When I say quick, I mean quick. We had a 6 year old on training wheels. It was less than a mile away. This side of the beach is a little bit busy, you have the North Beach Bar right there if you want to get a bite to eat or drink, but other than that it is just the ocean there to enjoy.
6. RiverSide Beach
~When you walk out the back side of the campground by the tents opposite of the police station. You will turn right go past the water plant to a public path. This is where you will find a big open beach. This is where the river opens up the Ocean. It isn't blue like the gulf, but it is nice, clean, and not wakes. It is perfect for little kids to play and not being bothered. My twins played for hours in the sand, playing catch, and splashing in the water. I felt safe the entire time letting them play around.
7. Farmers Market
~We rode our bikes down to the Farmer's Market on Monday evening. We experience meeting of local artists and entrepreneurs. We enjoyed some home jerky, BBQ sauce, and some fresh produce. I believe the kids enjoyed fresh fruit popsicles. The environment fit the feeling of the island. You were able to catch some local flare and not be too crowded. The market is held at the Light House.
8. Historical Sites and Tourists Views..
~The light house that you climb up inside.
~ Fort Pulaski
~Savannah Tours right across the River
~Dolphin Tours
We have visited South Beach where this is tourist side of town. You can purchase a 48 hour parking pass to visit different places on the island, because the entire island is paid parking outside of private. You can purchase the pass at the front office. It was $20 when we were there. We went to the South Beach to see how the beach was there. Once we got settled and the boys started to play. I was completely unconformable. We couldn't leave our blanket there and see both at the same time. There were way too many people for my comfort. The South Beach had a lot of the beautiful vacation rentals up there, resturants, bars, and shops, but we preferred the laid back location close to the campground.
We visited the Tybee Island Marine Center. https://www.tybeemarinescience.org/ . It was nice little science center for the kids to explore. They do field trips and camps there. They have visits out to the beach. We didn't do it that day because it was quite chilly and windy that day. We just went to the center. The admission is all based on good faith payment at the front counter and good for all day admission. The kids really like being able to put their hands in the tank to fill the sea life.
Tybee Island was a great place for high school Senior Portraits.
